- THERE'S A NEW KID IN TOWN.
- STABLEFORD FAVOURITES GET BLOWN
AWAY.
With conditions being almost pefrect, tthere
was an atmosphere of great expectations for the fort Baxter return
to Brent Valley. These expectations were soon confounded on the
first hole where only Con managed to score bogie and the second
hole where double bogie was the best score. However as Geoff
and Dave scored a par each over the next two, it looked like
business as usual. Dave was set to consolidate his position at
the top of the Stableford chart and Geoff going for four medals
in a row. The Baxter boys were finding that Brent Valley was
not going to be a push-over, as pars were not to be found over
the next three. It was Geoff who was faring best and he managed
to hold the lead around the turn.
Gradually, Con was showing the true grit
that had been absent from the scene for some weeks. His recent
experiences on major courses around the world had given him the
form to come back strong and he managed to trade blows with Geoff
up until the tricky par-three twelfth. This proved to be Geoff's
graveyard as he slumped to an eight and fell away, whilst Tony
slipped to within one of the lead. This position was squandered
with a six on the next and it was then Dave's turn to steal the
headlines. His mobile rang and a message from home urged him
on to a spectacular birdie on the index two fourteenth. Still
three off the pace, he had a good chance to challenge over the
closing holes. Unfortunately, a seven on the seventeenth against
par from Con meant that it was all over bar the shouting. A clear
win from Con from Tony and the big guns were silenced as Geoff
and Dave had to share third.
