BRENT VALLEY 10/8/02 EIGHT PARS GIVES MIKE THE EDGE A GAME TOO FAR, AS MIKE PARS THE ELUSIVE 2nd AND 14th AFTER THE COMP HAS ENDED
- AFTER MISSING OUT ON THE LAST GAME
OF THE SEASON and seeing victory
in the low score taken from his grasp, Mike came back with all
guns blazing. Hitting some mighty drives he set himself up for
taking two of his elusive pars to make it 16 out of 18 for the
Summer. The most impressive was the 14th, where his second shot
was a mere nine iron which he blasted 130 yards past the back
of the green, to be folowed by a downhill chip and a short put.
- The newly found power posed its problems though, as time after time he hit way left and into trouble. The resulting four blobs, including an eight on the par-three 12th, left him nursing only an average score after his eight pars.
- Alan experienced similar problems, as some impressive play was marred by a horrendous patch on 16 & 17, which saw him lose 10 shots to handicap. After Mike's disaster on 12, Alan was eight shots ahead of the field. With four pars in a row, Mike had clawed his way back to level it with two to go. A generous 10 for Alan who had gone OB, deep rough, OB OB before hitting a mighty shot to the back of the green, saw him out of contention. It was brother Geoff ,who had quietly become a contender , sitting between the two opponents with a hole to go. Unfortunately, he hit his drive low - left - onto the fence - back on to the 17th fairway close to the green. This gave him no chance and the resulting eight left him tied for second.
