AN OPENING PAR FROM CON AND PARS FROM GEOFF ON 2 AND 4 SET THE SCENE for an entertaining Stableford duel and with both boys on thirteen points with a third of the round gone the tension was mounting. Tony was going nowhere and Mike's drives were going everywhere but on the fairway. Dave was struggling, yet somehow managed to hang on to Con's shirt-tail to be one down in hois Stableford. Suddenly , Con threw in four pars on the trot, Geoff took an extra nine shots and Dave covered the same stretch in a creditable two over. Ten holes gone and Con had a five point lead on the field and was three up on Dave. Pars on 13 and 14 and a slip from Con on 15 brought Dave in to contention with three to go and rocketed him up the low-score table. Mike was still drivin his balls all over the place, yet with some great putting managed to scramble into third place. Con held his nerve over the last three to win 2-and-1. His 38 pointer brought him to within one of the record. Four double bogies was as bad as he went, with five pars over the first ten sewing up a great week. A seven-six opening put Dave on the wrong foot, but his five pars produced a great 36 pointer. Five pars from Mike did not produce the same kind of result. A long shot on eighteen was the only drive that came anywhere near the fairway and his 28 pointer didn't refelect the trouble that he had suffered. Geoff's opening form was good, but a string of sixes and sevens came courtesy of a sudden lack of timing. Tony will need to recapture some of his early form, if he is going to stay near the top of the table at the end of the season. Three weeks to go, four points between the top four and Con with plenty of scope for a run from the back of the pack. The eventual winner will be the one who can display some form over the final matches.
