- With the re-introduction of the Matchplay tournament,
there was an added competetive edge made even sharper by the
presence of an international guest. Marty, from Finland took
some time to adjust to yards and suffered badly over the first
nine. At the turn, he mistook the depth of the water hazard and
after many revisits settled for an eleven. The previous hole
added 9 strokes to his score, as he failed to get the customary
Fin Spruce bounce from the Brent trees, narrowly missing an old
fashioned British decapitation. However, he made a fine adjustment
on the second half and stormed back 19 shots better!
- It looked like business as usual, as Dave parred the first
and wnet into a two hole lead over Geoff, whilst Mike clattered
around in the trees following a couple of wayward drives. However,
things started to change. Geoff won six holes in a row, scoring
three pars by the halfway mark. Mike scored a rare par at the
sixth followed by two bogies and a par to go a hole up on Tony
and narrowly take second place.
- Geoff, however was six points clear of the field in the Stableford
with a superb 21 pointer.
- On the way back, everyone suffered the usual "slings
and arrows", although Geoff staid well in the lead with
Mike second, until a disastrous nine on fourteen followed by
two triples. With two to go, Geoff was seven clear and needing
a tie to take his match. Mike also needed a tie, but was fourth
in the stableford.
- With both players making par, their matches were in the bag.
Mike's five on the last earned him second on the Stableford,
but Tony claimed his share of glory with a fantastic over-the-ditch
drive followed by a great wood to the green for par.

- MY GOODNESS! MIKE'S
GUINESS DOES THE TRICK
- It was a trip down memory lane, as
Mike, Al and Dave put in an extra nine holes over at Perivale.
- A triple par start for Alan fizzled out
with a couple of sevens and an eight. Mike, fortified by a rare
pint of Guiness at Brent valley showed some good form, especially
on the third, where his drive was inches short of the green.
Dave, living the bachelor life, whilst his good lady was abroad,
seemed to be worse for wear and struggling.
