After suffering a string of
crushing blows from Alan in the Summer trophies and finishing
the previous night at Brent with a last hole 10, Mike was determined
to pick himself up and have yet another go at Alan's Sunbury
record score of 84.
A pitiful shot to the edge of
the bunker followed by another in and then two more out, gave
him a seven on three and the prospect of another struggle, However,
with true Baxter grit he steadied and clawed his way back to
18 points at the halfway. By this stage, it was Steve who was
setting the pace. Three pars and four bogies gave him a whoping
21 points by the eighth and a four point lead on the field. Two
blobs on the turn put his good score under threat, as Mike hammered
home four pars in a row to start the second half.
Alan was having his more miserable
days, as he turned ten shots down on Steve and Mike's 43s. However,
sensing that glory was being enjoyed up ahead, he started his
charge. Four bogies and then wham! Three pars in a row, followed
by a par five finish. Bother Geoff who'd had a quiet day, also
finished with a par. A great second half record of 39 by Alan,
but Mike had not only equalled this, but smashed the course record
with an eighteen hole total of 82.
Steve's 89 reflected the positive
way that he'd coped with his fright at the turn and reduced his
handicap to a tally more reflective of his recent play.
