Everyone had a taste of the
lead in a Monthly medal that went down to the wire. Steve's net
34 took it with a stirring display of consistent golf on a day
when the mud and the wind blew the rest off course.
Con charged into the lead
with a good par on the first. A rare two shot lead on the field
after one looked set to see him stamp his authority on the Baxter
field. However, Tony's birdie alongside a three-putt five, followed
by a four-put seven for Con produced a new leader. Unfortunately
for Tony, brilliance was followed by tragedy as he slumped to
eight on the third and Steve and Dave were now joint leaders
and ready for a ding-dong battle for the medal. The fourth saw
Dave out on his own by one, but a disastrous six on five seemed
to put Steve out of the running in fourth place.
On the sixth, Steve nearly
made the green in two but took a chip and two putts to complete.
Mike, in the meantime was putting in some great drives with "Fido",
his big-dog driver. His five put him level with Dave on net 23
with Steve one behind.
Mike's round came to an abrupt
halt, as Fido took a rabid bite at the tee to put him in a horrid
position behind the mound. Needing five shots to get past the
oak tree, his eventual nine put him out of it. Steve's par versus
six for Dave gave us another turnaround with one point in it.
The position stayed the same, with mainly bogies on the eigth.
Finally, it was Steve all
the way as he conquered the wind to pot a superb six on the last
to take victory.
