- One week to go before the Autumn Tour
and the rain was bucketing down. Mike, Steve and Tony displayed
a pathetic grasp of golf in the rain, as Alan battled on to a
respectable score. Meanwhile, Con was displaying the form that
made him evens favourite for Belgium, as he charged towards a
record score.
- A wayward shot on the first and a brilliant
recovery gave him bogie, but this was followed by two pars. An
unlucky second shot into a drainage ditch on four gave him duble
bogie, so he was now four over par. Par on five and then the
first Fort Baxter par on six for about a year. This meant that
he was foour strokes above handicap after six!
- A wayward drive on seven, almost wrecked
his chances, but he managed to get a point for his double bogie,
but when this was followed up by par on eight, things started
to get exciting. A par five finish would ensure a sub 40 score
and a club record!
- His drive went just past the ladies tee.
He then scuffed into the rough rright and scuffed again. Three
shots, 180 yards. A great recovery and then a mighty wood to
near the fringe. This was followed by a chip and two putts, for
a good ( but what might have been?) score of 42. The man who
eats pressure for breakfast had suffered a last hole bout of
indigestion!
- However, with the rest of the pack not
looking good, it could be a one-horse race in Belgium.
