ALAN BACK ON THE GOOD FOOT
MIKE IS MAN OF THE YEAR WITH TWO TROPHY WINS
"SAY IT LOUD! - 'I'M BACK AND I'M PROUD!'"

The last game of the year and it was like the Battle of the Somme, as Fort Baxter strategically picked their way through the thick mud, anxious to put on a good show iin the James Brown Memorial. The big match was Mike against Gavin. With the Low Score virtually spoken for, Mike was keen to secure an end-of-season double by winning the Stableford, as well as holding his place at the top of the Matchplay League. Gavin could thwart those ambitions by winning their match and earning a league-topping 37 points. Both players started badly and after two holes, Mike only had one point, with Gavin level in the match with just one point more. Mike then scored 14 points over the next five holes to go four up. He looked even better on the eighth with a fantastic drive and what looked to be a great wedge approach. He was unlucky with the bounce, however and ended with a six followed by a big blob on the next. Gavin was just two down at the turn, but needed to score well to get near his 37 point schedule. A blob on the next made things tough and although he parred the 11th, he could do nothing about Mike's more consistant play. He finally surrendered, five down with four to play.

Dave was a pale shadow of the player he had been recently. Needing just 28 points to secure his second place in the annual averages standings, he could only manage a sorry 18 and a big loss to Tom. Alan was keen to continue his recent return to form, but a double-blob start put him two down against Tom. A superb birdie on the next cheered him up and he fought hard to level by six. Tom seemed to be in good form and did not give up easily. Three down after ten, he levelled on the 14th. Back-to back pars from Alan secured the match and sent him on the way to a James Brown victory. Mike had been playing well and was in the hunt, but instead of going for the points, he gambled on pars in order to improve his Stableford score. The gamble did not pay off, as two wild drives ensured just the two points over the last three holes for a 31 point second place. A nice victory for Alan, but more work for Pam, as she got ready with the Brasso to polish the haul of trophies coming her way.
