Sometimes Russ would suffer from his insistence on putting style before results
Starting the season with a good lead in the 'Man of The Year' trophy, Dave has been feeling the pinch of some solid Autumn performances from Mike. With three weeks to go, he knew what he had to do. He had to win games, score points and hole pars. Up against Gavin, second place Stableford player, he secured a terrific 6&5 victory. Level at the fifth, he blasted four pars on the next five holes to go clear in the Atlantic Records trophy and to hit a 36 point schedule. Sadly, none of the holes were on his target list and no more pars were forthcoming on the back nine, which he completed in 34 points. The only consolation for Gavin was a solid deuce on eleven.
Alan's golden patch came after four holes, when he hit three pars in a row on his way to a three hole lead after ten. However, he was unable to keep this standard up and Tony took advantage of handicap to win four holes in a row and to finish two up. In the meantime, Mike and Russ were locked in a tense battle in which Russ scored steadily, whilst Mike was lacing good runs with miserable blobs. After a poor start, Mike hit six pars in a ten-hole stretch finishing with par on the elusive second-hardest. A final par on the last, prevented Russ from tying the match and Mike finished on 33, which was not good enough to improve his Stableford lead.
For his last game of the year, Geoff threatened a grandstand finish. Within nine foot on the seventeenth, he needed a putt for birdie to take the lead in the Low Score. Unfortunately, he missed by a whisker to finish one stroke behind. His 34 point finish tied Dave for the lead, but at the end of the day it was Russ who won on countback. Another competetive day for Fort Baxter with six players within three shots of the lead. Dave leapfrogs Con on the averages table but needs at least two 36 pointers to make a dent in the Stableford. Three wins of matchplay could do him a power of good, but there are plenty of holes still to be parred. Mike is starting to look good for the big one!
