Con signs out with the season's last medal

The boys used to tremble at the sound of Con's arrival on the golf course
Another sensational day's golf, as a full turnout of Fort Baxter experienced the most eagerly contested medal in years. WIth the soggy conditions always ready to trip up the unwary player, it was a wide open contest. Approaching the halfway hole there was a five-way tie for the lead and six pars on the eighth hole. Russell, Geoff and Gavin looked to be the pacemakers for the day, but Con and Mike were gritting their teeth and overcoming a poor start. Mike hit five pars in a nine hole stretch from the fifth, but this was bettered by Con, who hit five pars over six holes from the sixth. The bruvs were also knocking up pars, although Al was still trying to recover from a lost ball on the first tee.
The various matches were turning into big wins, although Mike/Al and Tom/Russ were both tight. With six holes to go, Con and Mike were level at one over net par, but Russ, Geoff and Dave were all two behind, with Alan and Tom just one more back. Mike did a fifty foot putt to within a yard to par the next and made a good recovery for bogie on fourteen. Russ did the same, but his handicap put him within one of the lead with Con and Geoff faltering. Just two bogies scored on the par-five, but Alan holed a thirty foot putt to score an eight, which handed his match to Mike.
After a scare on the penultimate hole as his ball nearly went o.b., Mike needed a couple of bogies to have a chance of medal victory, an improved stableford and a blobless round. Alas, he scuffed two shots, hit one in the bunker and stayed in the bunker on the next. Getting up and down from there put him level with Russell and so it was down to the last, as Con came from behind with a nice par to take the lead. Russell's five gave Tom a draw intheir match and put him behind Mike, who bogied. A five from Con made it a drawn medal, but gave him victory on countback.
The season is now very delicately balanced, with Mike there to be attacked. Gavin needs a 37 pointer over the last three weeks, Geoff and Alan both have chances in the Low Score, whilst Dave needs something special to protect his lead in the Man of the Year.
