JACK PALANCE MEMORIAL
MIKE ON SONG!
Two birdies make Mike top of the hit parade
JACK WILL BE SORELY MISSED DOWN AT THE FORT BAXTER LOCAL
Playing off the mat on the first hole proved to be a stern test for Fort Baxter, as Dave was the only person to score. The second hole saw a tens for Alan and also for Gavin, who was one hole up by virtue of his handicap. The only other match being played saw Dave go two up against Mike. A terrific chip-in for birdie saw Mike pull one back, but the gane aternated from one-up to two up, as Dave kept Mike at bay. The pattern was broken on the seventh, when Dave hit the first of two pars to take the turn with a four-hole lead. Fort Baxter's play was improving all round, as Alan hit two pars and a birdie from holes six to eight. In spite of this, Gavin took the turn with four-up, as he hit three pars over the last four holes.
Mike was firiing some good drives, yet struggling badly with his irons. This all changed on the tenth, when he hit a ninety-yarder into the hole for a great birdie. He started to show some solid play over the next few holes and fired a superb putt for par on fifteen, to go one off the lead. Gavin had sewn up his match by this time, but Mike looked odd-on to tie at the sixteenth, when Dave held him off with better putting. As with last week, Mike hit a superb drive on seventeen, pressurising Dave to go O.B. and setting up a thrilling last holer. Dave should have won, but his par putt stopped an inch short handing Mike the tie and an overall victory in the Jack Pallance Memorial. Gavin and Russ tied with excellent 35s, but Mike went two better to lead the Stableford by one. Dave's b;ob on seventeen, the double blob start for Gavin and Alan and Mikes poor showing on three of the first four holes took attention away from the magnificent performances over the rest of the game. With seven weeks left, there seems to be plenty of golf left for the remainder of the season.
