WASTED DAYS AND WASTED NIGHTS
Fort Baxter was always influenced by the early work of Freddy Fender
Just the four players for the second round of the Autumn Stableford, but what excitement they provided in the form of two key matches featuring Mike v Gavin and Con v Alan. With four bogies to open, Mike set the early pace, but Con recovered from a shakey start hitting birdie on three and par on the hardest hole. Gavin was picked up a brace of three pointers and after four holes was neck and neck in his game and one ahead of handicap in a three-way tie. Alan was showing the remains of jet-lag, going three behind Con in his match.
For the second week running, Mike hit six on the par three, giving Gavin the advantage. Con and Alan were almost as poor, as they tied on five. This seemed to signal a comeback for Alan and from here on he fought hard to pull back his deficit. Mike and Al both parred the seventh and Mike scored a great birdie from behind the trees on the ninth. Half way and Con's par put him three up against Alan with Mike two up in his game. The underdogs both parred on the par three and pulled one back on the second hardest, Alan scoring a valuable par. Two thirds of the match gone and the leads were just one shot in each game. A great recovery from Mike from the trees on unlucky thirteen put him up two, and Con went two up in his game. The next drama was on the par five, Mike in a good position after two hit a wild shot, but recovered for bogie with a ten footer. Con made a nice par and it was now dormi-three in each match. A fluffed shot from Alan and three puts from Gavin ended the encounters, but a wild drive leading to a pick-up nine by Mike tied the lead with a shot to go. A five from Gavin gave him a very good 35 points, but Mike finished with an even better 36. A fourth par from Alan gave him a respectable 16 points on the second half and signalled a solid return to form, whilst Con cursed his missed opportunities, as he settled for 31.
