BYRON AND WALT WERE AMUSED TO SEE THAT MIKE WAS NOT WEARING A TIE
5.30 am and the lightning and thunder signaled a gloomy end to the Summer season. As the rain bucketed down on the M40, the more dedicated members of Fort Baxter made their way to take up their last chance at changing the order of merit in the Stableford and Low Score trophies. By the time that they had assembled on the first tee, the sun was out and the puddles beginning to disperse. However, the boys found it hard to adjust to the heavy going and staggered through the first few holes, shell-shocked by their inability to move the ball. Dave opened up with a brace of blobs, whilst Mike took five shots to progress beyond the ladies' tee on the first. Mike scored the only bogie over the first two holes, as he tried to regain his composure, after his pick-up on one. However, he hit a second blob on three, as Dave fought back with a couple of pars. Gritting his teeth, Mike parred the fourth and fifth and the players embarked upon the difficult part of the course with a four-way tie. After the sixth, no player had advanced his score, everyone blobbing on the hardest hole.
It was Geoff, who made a big move, as he chalked up four points on the par-five. At the turn, his 15 points represented a two-point lead over Mike. Russ was staggering way behind on eight points, which was somehow good enough to tie Dave in their match, whilst Tony was two behind Geoff in theirs. After scoring his usual blob on eleven, Mike had the only chance of upsetting the ratings with a real birdie chance on twelve. Once again, the slope defeated him and he three-putted from eight feet. A par for Tony, on the next hole, gave him a slim lead over Mike and Geoff. A par from Mike made it all square on the next and they remained level until Mike's par on the penultimate hole, which gave him the lead and a win on countback. Tony's solid play helped him to pull three holes back on Geoff, as they went level into the last. Dave and Russ provided comic capers, as they staggered to the last with Dave just ahead with 23 points. With all four players scoring two points apieace, that's the way the game ended. Russell was the clear winner of the Stableford trophy and Dave edged Alan for the Low Score.
