Golf Harris squeezed out by two DykesWith such a backlog
of matches Golf (Tony) Harris was prepared to play with Dave,
Alan and Geoff simultaneously but to even up the numbers Dave
played in the second group with Gavin and Thomas. Tony was
clearly inspired by the prospect of repeatedly hitting his balls
against two Dykes and immediately shot into a two hole
advantage. Alan parred the third to recover one hole only for
Tony to par the next to regain his position on top. Geoff continued
to bring up the rear but reduced the deficit with a
slightly smaller disaster than Tony on the fifth when Alan achieved
a fine par. The Dykes had finally levelled the match for the
first time after seven tight holes. A straight birdie for Tony
on the eighth popped him back out front despite the
Dyke's two pars.
At the turn, Tony and Alan were level with Geoff just one
behind. Alan applied the pressure as Tony was tiring
from having to carry his old bag. Tony's body language was
a little deflated compared his erect statue when tackling the earlier
holes. Tony starts to question whether what he is doing
is legal and wishes the Sarge had shown up to clarify the rules
of engagement. As Tony stumbled on the tenth and eleventh Geoff
managed to draw level. Alan won or halved all the back holes
to win the match four and two. Geoff eventually took
the lead after the sixteenth and halved the last two to
win by just one after having to sink his putt on the last to
avoid a draw.
We were all concentrating on matchplay and knew Alan's was
on form. The count at the end gave Alan a round of
78 and 43 points but we expect a cut in his handicap. Geoff scored
35 points to advance his position in the Stableford Competition
but clearly Alan is now a contender.
