- It had to be the bizzare surrealist scoring system for the
late great goon Spike Milligan's Memorial Trophy and it looked
as if Al was going to continue his winning streak with two outright
wins to kick off this six-way matchplay event. However a disaster
on three, with Mike getting top marks for his par, there were
signs that this could develop into a real hum-dinger. And so
it turned out. The lead swung between Mike, Al and Dave over
th first half, with no great scores on the card. Mike was a shot
behind the other two, but Alan was notching up some solid positions
on the holes to gain a ten point lead.
-
- Always outstanding on the second half, Alan was looking good
and another 45 stroke back nine including three pars should have
been good for victory. However, Mike came storming home with
a record equalling 39 strokes. Pars on ten, fifteen and sixteen
saw him take the lead only to falter with a ball in the ditch
on seventeen. All square with one hole to go, but a magnificent
chip in for par took the trophy. A stunned silence gripped the
crowd, only to be broken by a high pitched squeal of "You
dirty rotten swine!" A fitting epitaph to mark the memory
of this legendary goon.

- THE BRUVS AMBUSH
STEVE IN MATCHPLAY
- In order to clear the backlog of matchplay contests, Steve
took on the Bruvs, but struggled to stay in touch, losing 4&3
to Alan and 3&2 to Geoff. A seven. eight, nine score on his
three worst holes distracted from some good golf by Alan, whose
five pars kept him in the low nineties.Geoff's ten on the first
kept him struggling, but he managed a couple of pars along the
way.

- Saturday 9th March
- GEOFF BECOMES BIRDIEMEISTER
FOR 2002
-
- On Saturday Geoff arrived without clubs or shoes and had
to resort to hiring a half set and using Alan's woods from time
to time. Alan also supplied all the balls as Geoff had none.
The Bruvs played a two ball and Alan kindly reduced his game
to Geoff's level. Geoff even won the front nine mostly thanks
to a birdie on the fourth. Alan could not contain himself any
longer and started the back nine with two pars to level the game.
The final result after handicap allowance was a draw.
