"IT'S ONLY A GAME" SAYS TOM, AS HE CHILLS OUT AT THE FORT BAXTER FLAT
Nothing short of a mind-altering scoring system would do justice to the memory of madcap Syd Barrett. And so it was on Saturday, as the Baxter boys, still reeling from Alan's fine karaoke party, turned up for madness and mayhem on the Uxbridge fairways. "Who needs fairway?" said Geoff, as his first shot bounced back from the trees and he fired a brilliant three-wood to the green for a superb par and sixteen points to go alongside Tony and Russell for the early lead.
Dave's par on the next was one of the few 18 pointers of the day, but Tony was looking the most consistent, just leading the field after three. However, Tom was scoring steady high points and recovering from his poor 3-point start. Suddenly, the game came alive as Geoff scored sandy par on the hardest hole to secure 18 points and the lead, as well as securing a big advantage in the low score contest.
Mike was next to score 18, with a huge 260 yard drive and par on the seventh. Losing a ball of the tee on the next, he did well to finish with double-bogie and six points. However, it was Tom and Russ, well in the lead, until Gavin shocked the crowd to lead at the half-way stage.
On the way back, the par-three eleventh took it's toll with only three players making bogie. With Russ scoring 18 points on the 13th, the lead was swapping between him and Gavin, but Tom was ready to explode, scoring 36 points over the 14th and 15th. Russell would not be shaken and his 18 on the 13th kept him well in the lead. Gradually, Tom hacked away at the lead, falling short by a mere point. It was an exciting last third of the course, with Tom scoring an impressive 83 points, fourteen more than Russ. Mike had a good last stretch to finish third, overtaking Gavin, then Alan. In the Matchplay, Con secured the championship with a messy win over Geoff, who had fallen from gace over the last tow-thirds of the course. Mike secured second place, coming back from three down to also take advantage of Geoff's finish, endng 4 and three. Tom had two nice wins to give him a chance of third place, currently held by Alan who beat Tony.
