RUSS, MISTAKENLY THOUGHT THAT THE 'FIREY FRED' LOOK WOULD BE A HIT WITH THE BABES
It's official: July 8th 2006 becomes the most hotly contested day in the history of Fort Baxter. The "Fiery Fred: trophy went right down to the wire, with three holes to go, there was one point between the top four players. With the margin not changing, there was a three-way tie to be decided on countback. Meanwhile, the three matches and one friendly resulted in three draws and a one-shot victory.
The omens for a good day's golf were always good. For the second week running, there were three birdies scored on the early holes, two of them on the first. In the second group, Mike had fired a blistering shot to within six foot, but missed his putt, scoring par. Russell was a couple of feet further back and missed birdie by a whisker. Dave chipped sixty foot for a spectacular birdie and Con putted twenty foot for a second birdie. Alan and Tony parred the next, but nobody could master the easy third. It was then Gavin's turn to chip in for birdie on the next, with Mike and Dave parring. Another three pars on the next, including Mike's third par and the boys were setting a furious pace. Five holes down and Mike and Gavin were three ahead of handicap, with Russell one behind. Everyone was brought down to earth on the hardest hole, with only Dave scoring double-bogie. However, a superb drive from Mike left him with a nine-iron to the green and a couple of putts for his fourth par.
The par five was tricky. Dave was the only one to score bogie and Con beat Mike's eleven with an eight. At the half-way point. Mike was leading the pack, three up against Con, Gavin one up against Alan. Dave was four up against Russell and Geoff two up against Tony. It then became fight-back time, as the leaders were challenged right to the end. Con made two magnificent saves over the next three holes. Out of bounds on ten, he was a whisker away from a bogie. A wild shot on twelve, forced him to drop off the path before firing a hundred yards to within two foot for par. In the trophy, Mike was bleediing shots, as Russell started to make up ground. After the fifteenth, Russell had a two-shot lead, with Gavin alongside Mike and Dave one further back. The three matches were very tightly balance, as nobody had more than a hole's advantage. Gavin and Alan parred the second-hardest hole to improve their standing in the Low Score.
On the sixteenth, Con fired a stunning shot up the hill, around the bend and over the ditch. Unfortunately, he took another four from here, but it was good enough to level with Mike. Geoff was the only player to have a lead in his match, with two to go. Tony's par on the next leveled that game, but Dave slipped with a nine. Alan beat Gavin and it was on to the last. Alan and Russ had the edge in their game the other games were even. In the trophy, Russ was ahead of Mike on countback and Gavin one behind. Tony and Dave bogied the next for a win and a draw. Con missed a silly short putt to end up level with Mike and Gavin used his handicap to secure a draw with Alan. With the Matchplay almost at an end, Con looks comfortable. Only Geoff can overhaul Mike, but it is a scramble for the remaining 'Man of the Year' points.
Next week: official times 6:58 - 7:07. If all turn up, we need to get there early to sneak in the extra man:
Con v Geoff • Mike Dave v Tom • Gavin Tony v Alan • Russell ( Geoff and Tom could play double-headers)
