CON REGULARLY PRACTICED CHIPPING OVER STACKED GLASSES OF CHAMPAGNE
A great morning's golf featuring 23 pars and 3 birdies with some very tight matches. For the first half, it was Con and Mike neck and neck pulling away from the field. Each player was holing great putts resulting in three pars and a birdie from Mike and two pars and a birdie from Con. At the turn Con was two up on Alan, but Mike's pair of blobs and Tom's amazing chip-in on eight meant that they were level in their match. Dave was just one up on Tony in a very tense match.
It soon becam a 'game of two halves', as Mike started to hit sand and miss short putts, whilst Con made some amazing long putts to lead to the end. Mike and Tom were never more than a hole apart right up to the sixteenth, but five blobs in six holes gave Tom a miserable finish going down 2&1. Alan fought hard to overcome a five-hole deficit and was still in the game on sixteen. Another stunning putt from Con for par was answered by a huge putt from Al to tie the hole, but it was too late and he went down 4&3.
Gavin showed signs of a recovery in form with a superb five-point birdie on fourteen and was just to points away from a top-three finish. In the meantime, Dave and Tony were locked into a tied game with six holes to go. Dave had never been behind, buut Tony never let him get far ahead. On the thirteenth, the game began to turn and Tony pulled off a good victory with two holes left in the bag. With all the tension of matchplay absorbing the crowd, Russell started to race through the field. Turning in 14 points, he picked up 13 points over the next five holes to get within one of Con. A blob on the next was a set-back, but he finished strongly to tie on the last hole, as Con finished with an adventurous five. Leap-frogging ahead of Geoff, Con has set up a thrilling climax to the season, scheduled for next Saturday.
