CON'S ASSUALT ON THE FRONT NINE WAS DEVASTATING
When Con said that he was getting new equipment, nobody expected this
The big match was always goiing to be Dave v Con. Both players attempting to restore their dominance, after a slight blip on the form-meter. With two pars on the first, the game was on, but another par from Con and then another meant that Dave had to put up the fight of his life. A double bogie on the next, showed that Con was vulnerable, but four pars in a row sent Dave reeling, as Con headed for the record books. Seven pars over the first eight holes and Con was now in a different league from anyone else. At the turn, he was three over par, with twenty three points under his belt and five holes in the lead. And it didn't stop there! Yet another par on ten and a spectacular score was shaping up. A character par from Dave kept him in the game and with Con scoring six over for the next four holes, it looked like there was a chance of another massive upset. Dave was within three, with four to play, but then came the crushing blow. Par number nine for Con and the game was over. To cap it all, he scored his tenth on the last for a magnificent score of 81. Incredibly, this was four shots behind his record from last year. From being close to bottom, in the Low Score Contest, he rocketed to the top with one game. Is there anyone who can stop him? Well .... perhaps. After a slack Winter, sprinkled with countless no shows, Tom came charging back to form. Sure, there were some wild shots, but these were followed by some monsters, enabling him to come from three behind in the early stages to beat Tony 4 and 2. Included in this score were four pars. His par five on the tenth came after two penalty shots, whilst a bogie six on fifteen also included two penalties. Cut out the wild shots and the boy could be unstoppable.
The tightest game was between Mike and Gavin. Neither player was close to being on form, but they hacked it out in a spirited contest. A good par on the first put Gavin up and he was three in the lead after four, but his swing was crumbling and it looked like Mike was getting back to shape with a drive to within two feet of the hole on five. His birdie was the signal for a strong comeback, but he never got close to that form again and was relying on mistakes from Gavin to keep him in it. Crawling back to plus one after eight, he stumbled and the players turned all square. From here on in, it was a case of see who would make the least mistakes. In the end, Mike just nudged it by one. Meanwhile, Russell was continuing his convalesence with a solid century featuring three pars and Alan nursed himself back to health with a nice last-hole birdie.
