MIKE AND JACKIE WERE CLOSE FRIENDS
They always looked forward to a quiet drink with Kent Walton, after the match
Perhaps the most challenging morning of 2006, presented the right conditions for a no-holds-barred mano-a-mano Jackie Palow Memorial Grapple. With sub zero temeratures to start and wildly unpredictable greens, the ball was bobbing about wildly making scoring difficult. However, as the sun came out, the fairways melted presenting the kind of thick mud that did for our boys in the trenches of Franc. By the twelfth hole, visibility was marred by a sudden blanket of fog, but by the fourteenth, the sun was shining and it was coats-off time. Mike showed the most consistency and was not far off handicap, but it was Gavin who kept up the challenge levelling towards the end of the first nine and taking advantage of Mike's big slips on twelve and thirteen. A couple of blobs later and Gavin handed Mike the overall victory, whilst Tom and Geoff battled it out in their match. Neither player could find form, but Geoff just had the edge, leading up to the twelfth. From here, it was a case of who could make the least mistakes. As Geoff blobbed the fifteenth and four-putted the next, the answer became clear. A nice three-and-two victory put him back on Mike's shoulder, as they approached the end of a long, hard matchplay series.
