MIKE SHOWED NO MERCY
The Fort Baxter boys could became a little too competetive, but the crowds at Ruislip loved it when they indulged in unconventional tactics
After a week when he had single-handedly taken on three top-rated players and come off with top marks, Con must have looked forward to a comfortable match against Mike, who had suffered his worst round in years. Oh, but what torment the golfing gods had in store. It was now Con's turn to suffer a complete loss of form, whilst Mike bounced back with one of his best-ever scores. Only a halved hole on five and a magnificent par-putt to tie on nine prevented a complete whitewash. After a disastrous tenth, it looked all over as the game went dormi eight. Mike then hit a great drive to within feet of the hole, as Con went wild on the par three eleventh. It was here that the big fight-back started. A three-putt from Mike and a great par from Con kept the game alive. Mike started to struggle, as Con hit form again. Two more pars and it was now dormi six. Could thye impossoble happen? Unfortunately for Con, the impossible remained ..... well, impossible. Mike hit back with a tie on fourteen to win and the hit a couple of pars to see him on his way to a nice 37 pointer.
The other match was shaping up to be a record breaking classic. Gavin bounced back from a blob opening to hit four pars on the way out, including three in a row at the end of the first half. A twenty-point opening kept him tie with Mike and on course for a goodie. However, in his match he was three down on Alan. How could this be? The answer - six straight pars from Al and an eight hole stretch covered in one over par. Absolutely sensational golf, which set up a very real attempt on Con's record 77.
Once again however, the Golfing Gods assembled to have a hearty chuckle at Al's downfall. A couple of double bogies then bogie on the easiest hole gave him a three- hole stretch covered in just two points. By the fourteenth, he had seen off Gavin, who had also lost form, but Mike was snapping on his heels for the overall prize. With two pars under his belt, Mike went two ahead with two to go, as Al's dream of glory faded with an eight on the par three sixteenth. He fought back with his eighth par of the day, but needed one more to tie. Both players bogied last, giving Mike a slender win.
