MIKE'S GLAZED EXPRESSION SAID IT ALL
It was Gavin's turn to smile, as he capped his season with a tremendous last-match performance
With Mike a mere one point clear at the top of the table, it was delicately poised for a tense last round finish to the Stableford Trophy. As nearest challenger, Tom didn't materialise, it was up to his dad to take up the challenge. If Mike could not improve his total, Gavin needed a cool 36 points to win, so it was going to be a real challenge. However, last season saw Gavin being thwarted by a stunning last month by Alan, so it could be his turn to taste last-gasp glory.
With a sorry nine on two, things did not look promising and it was Geoff who stormed into the Santa Trophy lead . At the half-way, Geoff had scored 22 points and was looking good. However, a birdie on nine put Gavin one behind and his target was well within his grasp. In the meantime, Mike was blobless and although 4 points adrift, he had every chance of improving on his target and making it harder for Gavin.
As the round progressed, Mike and Geoff faded away. Gavin dropped a point on two holes, but added another three pars and stormed away with a sensational 41 point victory, bringing the trophy back to the Cotrell household yet again.
Alan was unable to par the tenth, but secured the Low Score with a solid total of 67 and Geoff took the Blob-Free trophy with a solid 39 performance, and also won the attendance trophy from Gavin on countback. The Matchplay league rumbles on with Mike clear at the top, whilst nearest challenger Tom has two games in hand.
