"IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR THE FIFTEENTH!"
When Russell splashed his money around on a Saturday night, he always found that sailors flocked around to hear his golfing stories.
It was a start-to-finish victory for Russ, as he stamped his authority on the Ronnie Barker October Medal. Tom struggled with his form throughout the match, recording three blobs and just two pars, whilst Russell stamped his authority early on, going three up at the turn. By the twelfth, he started put on the squeeze with three more holes in a row to win 6&4. Alan looked to be the main contender for the 'Fork Handles' and was matching Russ for a third of the round. His intense match with Con had given him three pars, with another pair to follow before half way. However, Con was not giving in easily and notched up for pars to keep within one hole at the turn. Neither player was keeping an eye on the trophy board and fell out of contention by virtue of a number of pick-ups, most noticeably Con's surrender of the fourteenth, after he had lost his ball. In the end, the game finished all square, with Al losing his lead on the last hole. Between them, they demonstrated some exceleent golf with thirteen pars and twelve bogies. Once again, it was the blobs that dictated their overall positions, with Al's three beating Con's four. It was a case of 'all or nothing' as each player fought to the near death.
If there was going to be a challenge to Russ, it would come from the match between Gavin and Mike. Gavin had finally found his form and was scoring well, Mike was struggling with his, but managed to avoid a blob for the first time in many months. There was never more than a hole between them, until the fifteenth, when Gavin went two up, as Mike missed a two-footer. A minor collapse on seventeen gave Mike a chance of a tie, but he was unable to par the last and lost his second match of the series, with Gavin winning his first.
