"I DON'T BELIEVE IT! THREE PARS IN A ROW?"
Even when he was on a mission, Maxwell loved to hear about Mike' golfing exploits
Gavin took up from where he left off last week, with some steady scoring, as he umpired the tense battle between Alan and Mike, who were both struggling to find their form. Dave, seemed to have recovered some of his old flair, but was having trouble getting away from Russell, who was having another of his flying starts. After six holes, Dave had taken the lead from Gavin, who had stumbled badly on the eighth. However, no pars had been scored and no player was on handicap target.
The thick, damp rough was taking no prisoners and it was going to be a tough day where anything could happen. From this point, however, something did happen. Russell fired three pars in a row to pick up nine points and lead the field by two. Dave and Tom also picked up a par each to turn second and third. Mike parred ten to go two up against Al, but then blobbed the next two holes. A par and a bogie followed, but two pars from Alan tied the match with four to go.
Dave was fighting hard and managing to stay in front of Russell, but with four to go Russ had sneaked one ahead. In the Maxwell Smart Trophy, Russell was a cool three points ahead of Tom, with Mike and Dave a point further back. From this point, Mike put the squeeze on Alan, with three pars in a row. By the 17th it was all over. However, an eight on that hole by Russell, meant that Dave had a chance to tie the match on the last. Mike had now taken the lead by one in the trophy. Bogies by all three players meant that Russell beat Dave by one and levelled with Mike, who won on coountback.
