MIKE TOOK IT HARD
Mike and Tom look back at the eighteenth green
A great start from Tom, saw him three under net-par after five holes. Mike, opened with a blob, but steadied with a bogie, followed by four net-birdies over the next five holes. Geoff came into the frame with a fantastic birdie (net-eagle) putt on the seventh, this made him one of three players ahead of handicap at this stage. The par-five proved tricky, yet again. Tony crashed out of contention with a miserable 12, but nobody was covered in glory as doouble-bogie was the best score. Tom and Mike battled it out with bogies over the next three holes. Mike missed putts for par, but managed to take two strokes from Tom, who double-bogies a couple. It was now a tied game, with Russell quietly moving to within two of the lead. At this stage, Mike busied himself with seeing off Dave in their match, whilst Tom hit two pars to go two ahead. Tony had steadied himself but was now dormy four against Geoff. With superb approach shots and sensational pressure putting, Tony now hit two birdies, scoring nine points in two holes. Dormy two and the draw was still alive! Mike, meanwhile, hit a couple of pars to go one stroke up with one to go. Tom double-bogied the last and Mike was eighty yards from the pin in three. His approach shot looked perfect, but missed the bunker rim by six inches. Three efforts to get out, saw him losing in the last for the third week running. Geoff sank a pressure putt to draw the hole and win his match. A thrilling start to the season, with some good points up on the Stableford board.
