"DIDN'T WAKE UP THIS MORNING"
Long John sings his last blues
A tremendous 39 pointer from Geoff, featuring three pars and a bogie, gave him the Long John Trophy. However, the all eyes were on the battle for the Summer Stableford, where Alan and Gavin were battling it out. After leading throughout the season, Gavin had received two body blows by Alan, hitting him with an eighty point total to move two ahead. Steady play from Al brought him to the turn in 18 points, on target for a three point improvement. However, Gavin was on 16, which was way off his schedule. In spite of a couple of pars, Al could not keep up the pace and faded to a 31 pointer. Gavin, now needed 22 points on the second half. With only one point from the next two holes, it looked all over. He steadied on the next three and then, suddenly he hit 4,3,2,4. A birdie on the last could do it, a par woul give him a tie. After four months of golf, it was that close. Just a two pointer to finish and the championship was Alan's. A glorious finish to a tremendous season.
