GAVIN IS NOT SO SURE THAT TONY'S OFFER OF A YOUNG LATINO IS ON THE LEVEL
A terrific win from Gavin in the April medal, but a what-might-have-been round from Tony who started the new season with an astonishing 41 pointer. There were only two players in it, as they both hammered their opoonents in matchplay, although Tom made a good showing inthird, as he smashed Alan in his match. Unusually, it was the three losers who got off to the best start. Gavin and Tony started with sevens, but they soon poured in the pressure. A blob on four by Gavin put Tony ahead, but then four pars in five holes saw him take the turn three strokes ahead.
It was a tragi-comedy for Tony as he started the second half with a horrendous fourteen. ANy other player would have been waving goodbye to his medal hopes, but not Tony. The rest of his round consisted of two net pars, five net birdies and a net eagle. Twenty three points in eight holes, possibly the greatest streak ever. Although Gavin won with a terrific 67, Tony had pulled back seven strokes to take runner-up. Sixteen holes in 74 strokes, the other two covered in 21. Tony sat shell-shocked in the bar not knowing whether to laugh or cry. No such dilemma for partners Dave and Mike who had cried buckets in their efforts to choke back the laughter.
