THE BOYS LOVE GETTING TOGGED UP FOR THE BIG ONE
In the end, it was an anti-climax. With Mike struggling through the first half, it looked like, he was not going to improve upon his 28 point target. Tom was also struggling, but Gavin looked good. A mere 34 points could take the title and he had 16 in the bag, with eleven holes to play. He was also looking good for the Dave Allen, as he was four clear of Russell in second place. The Baxters were not having a good day!
Suddenly the wheels came off faster than a Schumaker pit stop. With only one point over the next few holes he found a new challenger in Dave who had sneaked a lead with eight to play. At this stage, Con was hovering in third place, but prepared to make his customary second-half challenge. However, Mike had not given up on his 28 point challenge, in spite of a paltry 13 point first half. A rare par on twelve gave him the inspiration to cling on to his trophy lead and stay ahead of Tom in his match.
Realizing that he may have thrown his match and the championship down the drain, Tom set to improve on his ten point first half and to come back from four holes down in the match. Three pars on the next five holes gave him dormy two. With two pars on the last, he could still take the trophy. Unfortunately a blob on the seventeenth gave it to Mike, who had played his best second half of the year to lengthen his one point lead and take his second championship with 174 points. His 31 points was not good enough for the Dave Allen, as Con took that on countback.
Consolation for Tom, who scooped the low score contest with a fine 69 point total, which included four birdies.
