IT WAS NEVER A BIG SELLER
but Tony reckoned he could shift a few through local Post Office outlets
It really was 'a walk on the wild side' on Saturday, as Fort Baxter defied the weather forecasts and stepped out to josstle for positions in the various Trophies up for graabs, As it turned out, February 19th could be looked back upon as a turning point in the Winter season. Tom ended up taking the lead in all three trophies, whilst Geoff started his run for home from the back of the pack, suddenly becoming a real contender for the championship. With the top three handicaps scoring fourteen blobs between them, the Jimmy Smith Trophy was battled out between Geoff, Gavin and Tom. Gavin's F.T. on one put him on the back-foot, but seven points in the next two holes gave him the lead, which he held until his second blob on the eleventh. From here, it was Geoff all the way, as he galloped to a two-stroke victory and a 4&3 win over Dave. The father and son pair did themselves no harm with a cool 36 points apiece, as Tom hit Tony 2&1. Studying the Stableford league, it seems as if this is shaping up to be the most hotly contested champioship ever with everyone in with a chance.
Alan suffered badly on the opening nine holes of his match with Mike, going into the turn four down. It looked like an easy win for Mike, who was still four up with five to play. He gifted Alan the next two, but looked safe as Al hit his drive onto the tenth fairway. However, a fantastic recovery to within a yard of the hole, put Mike under extreme pressure. Mike's put for par saved the match, as both players went dormy two. Another gift for Alan, who did a beautiful chip out of the bunker to make it dormy one. Mike totally folded with a blob on the last, as Al birdied for a great second-half comeback and a tie.
