Mike was feeling down, but a chance encounter with his golf coach made him feel much better.
It had been a bad start to the year for Mike. A long run of poor form, followed by a heavy cold that had laid him low. Excused the pressure of the matchplay and with the sole target of beating 100, he somehow managed to loosen up and played a steady round of blobless golf. ending up with a sub 90 and a handicap cut. However, the real action was in the matchplay, which kicked off in style. Gavin and Tony both found form with a magnificent 'game of two halves'. It looked like Tony, as he went three up after three and was leading the tournament for most of the morning, but Gavin holed a string of amazing putts and hammered some terrific long chips to put the pressure on and win 3 & 1. This ding-dong battle put them second and third behind Mike for the Travis. Gavin narrowly missed the overall title with a seven on the last.
Tom and Geoff were unable to challenge for the Travis, but never got further than a hole apart. A great par on one, gave Tom the lead, but from there on, it was Geoff who constantly levelled and then fell back. Apart from the fourth, he never nosed ahead. From the eighth, they won alternate holes, until the pattern was broken on the last with Tom levelling for victory.
It was even closer for Dave and Alan, who were scoring well on the first half. After five holes, Alan was leading the tournament and three up on Dave, who was well on the way to holding handicap. However, a pair of pars to close the half, saw him level the match. He then took the lead on the par 5, as Alan stumbled. From here, it was nip and tuck and anybody's game. In fact, it should have been Dave's game, as Alan double-bogied the last, but his triple ensured a draw.
