- THE SEPTEMBER MEDAL
- "Tonight the heartaches on me!"
With a terrific birdie on one, Tom was set for a good chance of yet another medal, but with Geoff inspired by an early lead in his match with Con and Tony playing out of his cotton socks, it could have gone any way. Sure enough, Con was having another one of his nightmare, back-down-to-earth seassions after having tamed the world's number one golf course and Mike was staggering from yet another disastrous first.
By the seventh, Geoff was one ahead of Tony with Tom back in third. However, major errors by Geoff and Tony on the ninth let Tom back, with Mike chasing hard. Inspired by Tony's great start to the game, Mike was pulling back from an early three-hole deficit. He was back in the lead by the 10th, with Tony and Tom snapping at his heels. Once again, the par-three 14th was his undoing. Although his triple bogie was enouch to square his match, both he and Tony had given the medal to Tom, who raced away winning by four clear strokes. Geoff and Con staggered to an eventual draw, whilsy Tony came from one down with three three-pointers to finish off Mike.
