- THE D DAY TOURNAMENT
- Fort Baxter never got to see real action on D Day
With Mike beating Dave 5&4 and Tom beating Alan 3&2, it looked like a breeze for the underdogs. However, this was far from the case and Fort Baxter witnessed two keenly contested contests to start the new matchplay tournament. Alan and Tom were neck and neck all the way to the 11th when Tom won two in a row. Alan pulled him back with a great birdie on 13, but in spite of scoring evenly over the next few holes, the handicap difference gave Tom another couple of holes and the match.
Mike took the lead early on, but a great 'sandy par' on three kept Dave alive. Mike's handicap and a good par on five put him three up, but the wheels came off on nine and he suffered all sorts of problems over the next six holes. Surprizingly, this 'bad patch' somehow moved him from three up to five up. Mike was scrapping to take the holes from behind, as Dave was finishing poorly. In the end, Mike, Tom and Alan all scored 93s with Dave two behind. Tony was looking set for a good score, but had to rush off two holes short.
