- THE MONTHLY MEDAL
- "Dooh!!" Mike gets pipped again as old rivalry continues and Con tries to contain his emotions.
It was a tense last day of the Winter season with a lot at stake. Dave started hacking from the first and looked in no form to improve his lead in the Stableford, whilst main challenger Tom was having an up-and-down round and looking far from capable of going for a last-minute dash to victory. It was Con who looked set to provide the excitement, as he parred the tricky first to come within one stroke of Dave's lead in the Low Score. However, he slipped up on all of the holes that had offered him an opening and the best he could do was to hold on to a share of second place, as Geoff improved a shot for a good finish to the season.
It was dark horse Gavin who started to show a bit of form and he was soon challenging Con for the monthly medal. Pars on the third and seventh put him two ahead, although Tom's dramatic birdie meant that his overall lead was shared. This was Con's signal to throw in a couple of pars at the turn, from whence he never looked back as the others faltered. Once again, it was Mike who made the challenge on the second half. His swing was proving to be a trifle wayward, yet he gritted his teeth and battled home. With pars on 14 and 15 he was within a hot of the lead. Once again, the seventeenth took its toll allowing Con to pull ahead and Tom and Gavin to draw alongside. Mike was the only one to bogie the last and thus managed to finish a stroke down in second place. With two shots separating the top four, it was one of the closest games yet.
Dave had a rare poor performance in last place, but finished a clear five points ahead of Tom for the Stableford. Another no-show for Alan means that the Matchplay will drag on into the Summer.
