(We apologise to our German friends for the slighty anti-German tone of the following report )
Every golfer's nightmare haunted the Baxter boys on Sunday as they put up a far-from-spectacular display on the first tee of the Yasmine course. The nightmare was elevated to Wes Craven proportions by the fact that the crowd was German!
Eager to display their finest Perivale skills the boys stepped up one by one to whack their balls from the elevated tee onto the unsighted fairway way below. Dave hit it straight and long. Steve gave it the Acton Massive, but it went left. Mike hit it he knew not where, accompanied by his trademark cry of "Oh No!" Geoff, unfortunately just missed the crowd with a shank that went into the bushes left. He didn't even get the satisfaction of crowning a Kraut!
Keen to stride off and forget the shameful display, the lads picked up their bags and started towards the fairway. Suddenly, the voice of the Course Marshal boomed out "Excuse me, but are these handicaps correct? " To add insult to injury "He then explained that we would be surveyed throughout the game by the course attitude inspectors and that we had to promise to finish the game within four hours.
Walking off, uttering Con's famous catchphrase under their breaths they proceded to get stuck into this tour's Doberman. Only Geoff was unable to shake off the nightmare, which came back to haunt him throughout the round.
Dave took the early lead, but Mike pulled one ahead after six. He then extended this to three by the half-way. Dave clawed back to within one by the thirteenth, then Mike got one back with a par. Both players within twelv feet on the par three sixteen. Mike three putted, Dave birdied. The game was tied.
Both players had nightmares on the seventeenth, but on thelast Mike was one up with a fifteen footer against Dave's twent footer. Two puts for Mike but Dave knocked it in to keep it level.
The play-off was on Monday over three holes. Both players had to take a drop, but a recovery by Mike, combined with a one-point handicap advantage, put him two up. Good drives on the second, but Mike's poor putting cost him dear and Dave was within one. The third was an anti-climax .. Dave was all over the place and Mike had it sewn up .. three shots into the bunker, but only a wedge and a put for par. It wasn't to be ... five shots later and Mike was in the hole for zero points ...... good enough to win.
