THE MONTHLY MEDAL &
FAY WRAY MEMORIAL
KING KONG GOES APE OVER KING CON
Con beats Tom on countback, with Alan just a stroke behind, in a classic Baxter encounter.
Fay may be dead, but Kong soon picks a new partner. Con looks delighted, but Catherine consults her lawyers

With everyone back from their holidays and a full turnout, the eager Baxter boys decided to start the season early with a combined monthly medal and Fay Wray Memorial. It turned out to be one of the most thrilling contests in a long while. Alan and Con had both been jinxed by the opening hole, but this time they set of with a good opening brace, as they went net level and net +1 for the first two. However, the rest of the field had a disastrous start. On the first two holes, five players chalked up a total of three Stableford points between them. Mike was net +7, but made a big charge scoring net -5 over the next nine. His five pars brought him to equal second with Con and two behind leader Alan.

Tom had also started badly, but was making a more steady push. His net +4 over the first two was steadily worked upon and reduced to +3 by the 17th. With the leaders working hard to retain m omentum, he was now tied for the lead with Con. Alan had looked like the most likely winner, but his net double bogie on 15 saw him drop two off the lead with a hole to play. The leaders both dropped a shot, leaving Alan in third place by one. On countback, Con took the medal with his one shot lead on sixteen.

Mike's net triple on 15 saw him drop to fourth, but Geoff recovered from his poor start with some steady play and finished one shot behind. It was a welcome return to Gavin, who played a non-scoring game to test his ageing elbows and finished in one piece. However, it was Russell who had the biggest disaster, when he fell in the ditch on the fourth. With his ankle visibly swelling to King Kong proportions, his playing partners declined to lash their trolleys together to provide a stretcher. Instead they gave him sound advice as to how to use an eight iron as a walking stick and sent him on his way. The true Baxter spirit!
