- STEVE IN A CLASS OF HIS OWN
- New course record as Steve hammers Mike in Matchplay
- After an absence of three weeks, Steve returned to Brent
Valley and moved into a class of his own. With the Baxter boys
struggling to Make any scores in the thirties for the past few
weeks, Steve showed what a few sessions on the practise range
could achieve. His 43 pointer was 14 points ahead of the next
man - Mike, who had unfortunately drawn against him in the matchplay.
Steve's final score of 83 was a new course record and featured
six pars and a birdie! However, with two holes to go he needed
too finish with a coupe of pars in order to break the magic 80
barrier. With a six footer on 17 for birdie, the bookies reduced
the odds to evens. However, the last hole curse struck once more
as he missed the put and stumbled to an eight on the eighteenth.
- In the matchplay Mike's woes began on the fourth where his
bunker shot from the wet sand went wild and resulted in a triple
bogie. He battled gamely for the rest of the match, but was no
match for Steve's power and accuracy. He was finally put out
of his mysery by Steve's par on fourteen. Once the pressure was
off, Mike went triple par for the second best score of the day.
- Dave, the most consistent player of recent weeks, stumbled
to a 23 pointer and defeat at the hands of Geoff, whose 22 points
masked an ability to get the knckout blows landed where they
most hurt. Dave's early lead dwindled over the tricky fifth and
sixth, but it was on the par three seventh that was the turning
point. Geoff turned out to be the least incompetent as he took
the hole seven to eight! By the half way, he had won five in
a row for a three hole lead. from there on it was all square
Geoff's par on sixteen tied it up.
- Steve now leads the low score contest, while Alan has joined
Dave at the top of the Stableford.
