LOCAL KNOWLEDGE GIVES MIKE THE NEW YEAR CLASSIC

CON TAKES LOW SCORE AWARD WITH A MUDDY 99

After the long Christmas and Millenium celebrations, the boys were gagging to get out and get the golfing year under way. Although the rain drizzled relentlessly and the mud piled up to ww1 proportions, the New Year Classic was extended to the full 18 holes on the tricky Trent Park course.

The stableford scoring system produced a superb cut-and-thrust competition with Dave hitting the front only to be challenged by Alan and Mike over the first five holes. Geoff's double blob start left him reeling. However a couple of pars and a two and a three pointer made him a contender. By hole 8, he was in the clear and hung on through 9 and 10.

Dave showed all of his old competetive fire as he shot back-to-back pars to regain the lead on the 11th only to hand it back on the 13th. Another par put him clear once again, but the 15th took its toll on everyone but Mike, who had slowly worked his way back to level it with three to go. A couple of three pointers saw him clear with no-one able to shine on the last. A consistent round from Con (who blobbed on the first and the last) and a storming second half by Tom gave them a share of second place.

Take away the handicaps and the competition was still a tight affair, with Alan holding the lead over the first three and Dave catching him on the fourth. Mike's birdie pulled him up to Dave, as Al fell back. However, it was Alan all the way to the 14th, with Dave's back-to-back pars giving him a brief share of the lead on the 11th.

Pars on the 13th and 14th put Con in the lead, but Mike was fighting hard and Alan was wilting. Mike won the 15th and alll three failed to sink their par attempts on sixteen. Con and Mike parred 17. The last hole and anything could happen. Con had a three point lead. Mike and Alan tied for second, Dave had fallen away. As it happened, all three scored sevens to kepp the position the same.
